I carded three totally textured, add-in filled sparkly batts. I then spun a bobbin full from a batt and a half and proceded to navajo (chain) ply it. Here it is:
Lexi was so nice and taking the class (and a plying class with her) has really inspired me (I hope these photos inspire you). It was fun to just let go from creating coordinating color batts and going crazy with the add-ins. So I'm going to be making lots more of these amazing batts and some yarns too. If you love how this yarn turned out and think you would want to spin a crazy batt I'm now offering what I call Hello Purl PARTY Batts in our Etsy shop. These batts will have lots of textured wools in a mix of (totally random) colors plus all the fun add-ins like sari silk, yarns bits even feathers!
Well we walked around a park for a few hours in the afternoon. We drove to Dave's Falls County Park in Amberg Wisconsin. The paths were a icy and had snow yet. What did you expect this is April in Wisconsin. Don't you just love it?! I normally don't blog about this sort of thing but I was inspired by the different textures I saw. I've been inspired and I would love to translate my photos into fiber art.
Since not everyone can't make it to the events we sell at I decided (after a few requests too) that I should put some in our Etsy shop.

These kits contain a variety of fibers including fluffy farm fresh wool and super fun add-ins like angelina, silk noil and milk fiber. When I do carding sessions at home I will create fiber groupings like the kits, like 10 at a time and card them up into batts. So now you can create amazing batts of your own at home with these kits.

Without further ado here is the sneak peek for the shop update tomorrow:

Modern bedroom seeks rustic industrial decor to complete it. Newly painted room in a blue gray, with teal curtains and oak hardwood floors would love some rustic, vintage, industrial accents. OK not really, well maybe.

My bedroom is currently under construction. Nothing super major, we aren't removing any wall or anything like that. Carpet is currently going to hardwood laminate flooring, I just painted the walls and trim and the hubby hung the curtains I picked out. I've been perusing (yes I do use this term in real life, just kidding) Etsy for some great decor to accent the room. I'm really drawn to a modern meets rustic industrial design. Don't believe me just check out my Pinterest board on interior design or just want to see my decor style.

So I created a treasury with the thing I would LOVE to get. In reality I'll be doing some DIY things like the art work, lamp and mirror revamp and the hubby will be building a couple shelves, a headboard, nightstand and desk. I'll show you all the room when we finish.

So I was almost finished knitting the Elk Tooth Shawl when I realized I wouldn't have enough yarn to finish the pattern. So I spun up some milk fiber in a bright blue for some nice contrast. I wanted to put a stripe in the middle and not just use the blue yarn at the end and make it look like I ran out of yarn and just put it in to finish. That meant I had to undo or frog (rip it, rip it, rip it) some of my knitting.

Blocking the Elk Tooth Shawl I knit

I didn't know for sure where I was in the pattern so I knit a few extra rows just in case. Well that didn't help at the end because after I added the rows of bright blue and knew I wouldn't have enough yarn to finish again. I didn't want to start over and didn't want to add a new color. I spun up all of the bright blue milk fiber. Jessie could have dyed me more but I wanted to finish it so I could wear it too my husband's work Christmas party. So instead of the seed stitch at the end I knit stockinette to keep the same look as the top and make a smaller trim. If I had more yarn I would have liked to keep the pattern because I like the look of the seed stitch.

I have never blocked a shawl before and wasn't sure it would turn out but I think it looks nice. I just soaked it in warm soapy water (non rinse soap). Gently squeezed and laid it on a towel that I put over a piece of cardboard. I pinned it down so it wouldn't curl up. Blocking it also helped show the YO (yarn over) stitches better.
I'm using my hand-spun yarn from an art batt by lanitiumexmachina on Etsy. It's one of her GLAM batts and is called "One Mind".
I'm almost finished and have found the pattern easy and fairly quick to knit. But I've been told by multiple people that I knit fast. I spun the batt thinner then I normally spin but it has worked well for the pattern. I've never blocked anything so I'm hoping that part goes smooth and will have it finished with photos on Monday.Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13395259430856406058noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1971404526892905420.post-21267741991124498962013-01-01T07:00:00.000-06:002013-01-01T07:00:10.960-06:00A New Year!

I'm excited for the New Year and what it has to offer us and Hello Purl. It's looking good. We have new fiber fairs and art shows booked. We are going to offering new hand-dyed fibers like panda top, soy silk, milk and icicle! I'm experimenting will hand pulled rovings too. I've been working on my lampwork skills so we can bring you glass bead spinning wheel hooks and stitch markers.
We are looking into getting our yarns and fibers into more local yarn shops. For those that are close to us we are developing another way for you to create with us and your friends by hosting Hello Purl classes/parties!

The plan is to blog at least twice a week and have a shop update once a week. I made a schedule to help me stay on track. Here it is:

Monday: Made it! This is where I will be sharing some finished projects that I've been working on.

Tuesday: Tutorials and Patterns. I will be sharing some how to's and DIY projects that are mostly fiber related. As well as knitting patterns.

Wednesday: Wordless. This is where I will just post a photo that I took. I'd love to share more of my photography work with you.

Thursday: Things I love. This could be a product I love (fiber related or not), a business shout out, a favoritve pattern I've tried or just anything that I would love for you to know about. I may even put it in a fabulous Etsy Treasury.

Friday: Fiber Arts. Friday will be a post about fiber because that is what Hello Purl is about. We are fiber arts with a spin after all!

Saturday: Sneak Peek. This is when I will show you a sneak peek of what I'm knitting, spinning, felting, creating. Or of the shop update.

Sunday: If we don't have a show I will be doing a shop update.

Quite some time I see. I'm going to working on a blog revamp and wanted to let you know that some really fun things are going to be coming to the blog. I'm not sure when it will happen but I would like to have something for you by the end of October. Our website and online shop will get a revamp too. In the mean time if you are on Facebook check out our page for any updates.

Finally because I like to have a photo in every blog post. Here is a recent yarn I spun. It is called Day of the Dead and it even has skull beads!
That isn't my life at (almost) 29 and I'm happy with that. I own my own fiber arts business, I'm happily married with two little boys, I stay at home with them and the cat, and I own a van, gasp yes a van.

Why am I letting you know this? Because it is OK to be in a different place in life then you though you would be. It may just turn out better then you could have ever imagined. Sometimes it may get hard but if you have balance doing the things you love and sharing it with the people you love it is all worth it.

We were vendors at the Shepard's Harvest in Elmo, Minnesota. It was a huge success for us as newbie vendors and indie fiber artist. Many people were surprised that this was our first time vending at a fiber festival. I hope that was a good thing. Check out our booth!
We almost sold out of mini fiber batts (1 ounce art batts). Jessie and I made 26 and came back with 3. The Angelina flew out the door. It was most popular with the little old ladies, yes you read that correctly little old ladies. Silk hankies (mawatas) were very popular as well. I carded 125 fiber art batts and came back with 60. Even a few going to be spinners took some home. StevenBe took 10 of our batts to sell in his shop(s) and Artisan Knit Works bought a dozen of our hand-spun yarns to sell in her shop. You can now find our fiber in Minnesota and Michigan (as well as Wisconsin of course).
I appreciate everyone that came by our booth and bought some of our fabulous fiber. It is what keeps us going and get to do something we love. It also helps us support those small farms. We got some beautiful fleeces (sheep and alpaca) from local small farms. I'll show you what I will be carding into some new batts soon. We had lots of fun and would love to do it again next year!Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13395259430856406058noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1971404526892905420.post-47931387565327388372012-04-20T07:00:00.000-05:002012-04-20T07:00:08.868-05:00Textured Art Yarn Market Bag

So I just wanted to share with you a project I knit using a textured art yarn that I spun up. I had wanted to spin something for me so I dove into my personal stash. I picked an art batt from Spinup Yarns and some locks from Lanitium Ex Machina and spun a lockspun textured art yarn single. I thought I would make a cowl from a video I recently watched by a fellow fiber artist (Neauveau) that showed how to make a cowl using an elongated stitch. I started to make the cowl and well, it got really long and stretchy. So, I thought it would be fun to turn it into a market bag before it got too long. I knit a bottom on it by decreasing like a hat and knitting regular (no more elongated stitches). I then picked up stitches on the top and knit a seed stitch handle.
I think I'm going to make another version of an textured art yarn market bag to share with you before farmer's market season begins. If you want to try and make one like this one here is what I did:

Needles: Size 10
Yarn: 78 yards of bulky textured art yarn
CO 30 stitches
Knit in round on circular needles
Rows 1-18 Knit using and elongated stitch
Row 19 Knit (do not use an elongated stitch)
Row 20 *Knit 5 PM K2tog* repeat until end of row
Row 21 Knit
Row 22 K2tog after every SM
Row Knit
Keep decreasing by K2tog after SM then knit a row then decrease until you have a few stitches left. Switch to double point needles when it is hard to knit on the circular ones.
Pull the yarn through the remaining stitches to bind off. Cut yarn then weave it inside and secure it.
Handle: Pick up 7 stitches from the edge
Seed stitch handle (Knit, Purl until end of row) until desired length or until you run out of yarn (like I did) but save enough to BO
BO using the 3 needle bind-off method with 7 stitches on the opposite side of the top of the bag.

There you have it! So I tried to make this more of an official pattern but I knit without writing anything down so sorry if it is hard to understand. So are you going to try and knit a market bag with some textured art yarn? I sure hope so. (If you are looking for some yarn or a batt to spin to make some check out our shop.) Please share pictures if you do knit a market bag using textured art yarn.
The rabbits are currently in a nice size hutch in the garage to keep them warm for winter and we will soon move the hutch outside. It may snow again because that is how the weather in Wisconsin is and we did just shear them earlier in the month. So for now they are inside but when the weather is nice I will bring them outside to play in their playpen.

So here are the rabbits enjoying the playpen outside...
So Jessie came over and helped shear them. The first two times we sheared them we used a scissors which took quite a long time. This time we used dog clippers with a special blade for fine hair. Jessie did the actual shearing since she trims her dog's hair and I assisted in the holding. The rabbits did very well with the whole process and now that it is getting warmer I'm sure they enjoy less fur. It is necessary for the rabbit's health to get sheared so they won't over heat or have mats which are uncomfortable for them. Then I get to have wonderful fiber to spin.
Studio and Gifts (in Green Bay Wisconsin) on Tuesday. It was lots of fun and our wonderful class made some beautiful felted bowls. I forgot my camera so I don't have any pictures of the process but I did take a few pictures of the bowl that Jessie and I made. So at least I hope you enjoy them. The class was so wonderful we will be offering it again in the future so look for that and I will hopefully bring my camera.
I saw this technique when I first started spinning so I didn't think I was even close to attempting it a year and a half ago but last week I gave it a try. I learned how to core-spin where you wrap your fibers over a another piece of yarn or crochet thread. So instead of wrapping your fibers over yarn I wrapped them over wire. I used some 26 gauge wire I had from my previous jewelry making crafts, carded a batt from wool, bamboo, soy silk, recycled sari silk and of course some Angelina for sparkle. This is what I got:

Wire-spun yarn!

Fiber core-spun over wire.

I then decided it would be fun to make some jewelry with the wire yarn. So I knit a rectangle for the necklace on size 15 needles and stretched it out a bit. For the bracelet I knit another longer rectangle and bent the wire so it would curve. I use one of Jessie's handmade buttons for the clasp part. This is what I got:
